Introduction To Well Control Course

ABOUT THE COURSE

This course has been specifically written for those people who are nervous about taking their well control exam (whether WellCap or IWCF) for the first time or who simply have little or no knowledge of the subject.

Beginning with the absolute basics, the course takes delegates all the way from gas, oil and pressured water influxes through to shutting the well in, completing kill sheets and killing the well so that delegates will find it easier to pass their first well control exam.

Presentation material is through the use of the Introduction to Well Control Manual, PowerPoint, case histories, videos, digital film and kill sheets (jack-up, platform, drill ships and semi-submersibles).

COURSE CONTENT

• Pore pressure (oil, gas, condensate and water) and geological formations. Where does the pressure come from? What is a kick?
• How pore pressure is overcome whilst drilling; the different types of pressure downhole whilst drilling and tripping for example. The importance of mud weight, particularly hydrostatic pressure.
• Drilling Fluids – The first line of defence against a kick. What is important.
• The circulating system.
• The second line of defence – Well Control Equipment. Diverters. The BOP Stack – The Annular Preventer and how it works; Rams and how they work. The Accumulator System. BOPE for Jack-Ups / Platforms and BOPE for Semi-Subs and Drill Ships.
• Shutting the well in. What do the key pressure SIDPP and SICP mean? Shut-In Calculations
• Filling-in a Kill Sheet (Jack-Ups / Platforms; Semi-Subs & Drill Ships)
• Kill Methods: Driller’s Method; Wait and Weight Method
• Circulating out kicks with both methods; how the SIDPP and SICP gauges vary – and what they mean.
• Stripping back to bottom. Tripping.
• The key points of Deepwater and HPHT Well Control
• Well Control Formulae
• Kick Tolerance

• All those who are nervous about taking their first (IWCF or WellCap) Well Control Exam – e.g. Pumpmen, Derrickmen, Assistant Drillers, Graduate Engineers.
• Drilling Contractor personnel

DOCUMENTATION

The Introduction to Well Control Manual, used extensively throughout the course, will be provided to all delegates to take away at the end of the course as will Kill Sheets for Jack-Ups / Platforms and Semi-Subs / Drillships.

THE COURSE FACILITATOR

Dr Michael Gibson, who has 20 years of course facilitation experience, 30 years total oilfield experience. He is one of the few Instructors’ in the world who has attained Advanced Well Control Accreditation through IADC.
