Conceptual Engineering, Feasibility Studies and Project Engineering can quickly identify equipment availability, technique and methodology shortfalls which might, were they readily available, improve project economics and / or safety.
IDEAS has been involved in a variety of technical advancements with Universities, Service Companies and Operators. For example, we have been advisors in the area of drilling with high frequency / high energy sound at Aberdeen University, UK, conductor position determination with reflected sound at Herriot Watt University and slim-hole drilling technology in Germany which resulted in Europe’s first Slimhole well.

We have also been involved in HPHT, multilateral and slim-hole developments as well as understanding stuck pipe, resulting in now industry standard stuck pipe prevention practices.

Regarding HPHT wells, IDEAS has been extensively involved in drilling fluids research – which is crucial for a variety of reasons – well control and performance to name but two examples.

Regarding casing design, IDEAS has been extensively involved in casing buckling, in particular with regard to HPHT wells and TOC.
One area which claims more and more dollars each year is drill-pipe twist off and subsequent high cost side-tracking operations due to drillstring fatigue and vibration. IDEAS has been extensively involved in R & D projects in this area.

Through utilising the methodology and experience base gained, for example, on the former frontier areas of HPHT, multilateral and slim-hole drilling, IDEAS can readily tackle Research and Development projects on either a stand-alone basis or in conjunction with the world's leading universities, research houses, laboratories, governmental agencies and testing facilities.
One area in which IDEAS has been extensively involved is in jar placement optimisation. Impact forces were studied extensively with respect to stuck BHA’s (drilling assemblies) such that jar placement is optimised.

Through its extensive knowledge and understanding of survey tool performance and directional drilling, IDEAS is regularly involved in wellbore positional error modeling. This helps to maximise oil / gas production, minimise collision risk (with conductors / adjacent wells) and aids relief well drilling.
