Risk Management & Safety

The number and frequency of onshore and offshore disasters worldwide is not dropping. Recent shallow gas blowouts, death through the simplest causes (eg. crane and shipyard related) is simply not acceptable. Why do these events keep on re-occurring? Simply – risk is an ugly subject, and we often behave as does an ostrich – burying its head in the sand. It will not happen. These things happen to someone else. Yet – what if they happen to you? With everything, thorough risk assessment is essential if safety is to be maximised.

Simply, the identification and management of risk is paramount if safety is to be maximised and risk minimised.

Typically, disasters occur following a very quick series of events which are co-related. When study work in the area of risk looks at a stable process, it can be seen that disasters typically do not occur – since the process is stable. When however the process or series of events is not stable then this is when disasters occur.

Through its thorough, comprehensive and detailed understanding of all subsurface issues from the reservoir back up to the choke and on to the process train, IDEAS is readily able to identify any risk or risks associated with all aspects of the well’s life-cycle – and can provide solutions for either risk elimination or risk mitigation.

Such an approach to a well’s design, construction and operation not only ensures that the well is being operated in the most safe manner possible but that, over its life-cycle, it has been designed to be as cost-effective as possible, requiring minimal / zero intervention whilst producing maximum hydrocarbons to surface.

To help to fully understand and explain all facets of risk (both stand-alone and inter-related), IDEAS has invested heavily in QRA (Quantitative Risk Analysis). Our engineers and our software are able to explain to clients the likely contributing causes of untoward events, the likely consequences and what can be done to mitigate or eliminate these undesirable events.
